How To Choose the Best Bespoke Suit for Women & Measurements

Gloria Briones • Sep 16, 2022

Compared to the words "men's suit," the phrase "bespoke suits for women" sounds a little trite. After all, women began wearing suits as a result of the frame of reference provided by men in suits. As a result, there is sometimes an automatic association with a woman in a suit with a "masculine flair" about her. And while it may seem more interesting to think of a woman in a dress and heels than a woman in a suit, something fresh and new is happening in the female sartorial world.

It's too soon to tell if the recent interest in women's tailoring will last. However, we are aware of the uproar among women who have discovered the joy of wearing hand-sewn items. And we wonder if, after two generations of wearing hand-sewn items in favor of a slew of ready-to-wear clothing, this appreciation for tailoring is still dormant in our DNA and is now being reawakened.

Early Days of Bespoke Suits for Women

Early Days Of Bespoke Suits For Women

Women enjoyed wearing well-fitted suits in the 1930s, 1940s, and early 1950s. Following the 1950s, the female suit virtually vanished from the fashion radar for the next 30 years. Then, in the 1980s, we saw women enter management positions at an increasing rate while still wearing suits to work. These suits were typically unremarkable, and knowing about the finer points of tailoring would have sounded ridiculous to the average woman. At the time, "buying a bespoke suit for women" usually meant a trip to Brooks Brothers for the discerning executive woman.

But now, women are noticing how the art of tailoring can enhance a wardrobe and work for them in ways they previously did not understand. It's nearly impossible not to notice something unique about a custom-tailored suit or a well-executed made-to-measure item. As a result of a population with a penchant for bespoke tailoring, even ready-to-wear houses are attempting more precise cuts in coats and trousers.

Before the 1980s, when the suit was so closely associated with something worn primarily for work and church, we can find real examples of women dressed in suits to communicate elegance and sophistication.

As women realize that wearing a suit does not have to be based on the prototypes provided by their elegant male counterparts, a new world of possibilities opens up for them, and a woman's style begins to take on a life of its own. It's no longer a "bespoke suit for women"; it's a work of art expressing her personality.

We can only wonder if the bespoke tailoring industry and made-to-measure women's apparel will secure a genuine presence among fine tailors worldwide as more women become aware of their option to own a bespoke suit. We believe that the key point will be women's awareness level.

Guide On Getting Measurement For Bespoke Suits For Women

While tailoring and sizing options for men's suits are plentiful, it is one of the few areas of fashion where women may struggle to find assistance when compared to men. This is surprising given that women have arguably more body shape variation than men and are equally passionate about well-fitting clothing. I've spoken to many women who "just can't find clothes that fit" due to large hips or a small bust. As with our men's collection, our goal is to make made-to-measure accessible to all, whether you're looking for a truly bespoke, unparalleled quality wedding gown or a more affordable first made-to-measure suit. The good news is that taking your suit measurements is extremely simple; follow the guide below, and the possibilities are limitless.

Primary Consideration

Before you begin, you will need a flexible / cloth measuring tape and a pen or other method of taking measurements. Wear a typical bra that you would wear with the garment, and if you have jacket, shirt, and trousers that you know fit you well, have them on hand as this can help you judge certain measurements. If you have a friend nearby, this can be useful, but it is not required.

When you are ready to take measurements, go through the list below. This is not an exhaustive list, but it usually provides us with everything we require while remaining simple to complete ourselves. Follow the instructions below as illustrated, using a relaxed but firm hand; never pull the tape measure taut. Repeat each measurement three times to ensure accuracy and round all final measurements up to the nearest half inch. First, measure your height (in meters) and weight (in kilograms); this will aid in overall sizing.

  • Bust / Chest
  • Measure the circumference of your bust at its fullest point while wearing a typical bra for you (or the bra you intend to wear if it's specific). Pull the tape measure taut and relax your arms by your sides. The value should essentially be your bra size, but always measure and never guess.

  • Under Bust
  • Again, measure the circumference of your chest directly beneath your breasts while wearing a properly fitted bra. Check that the tape measure is not twisted and is level. If your bra was properly fitted, the value should be the band size.

  • Shoulder Seam to Bust
  • Measure from the shoulder seam of a well-fitting shirt/jacket down to the fullest part of the breast. Because the shoulder seam position varies depending on the individual's bust and the bra, it is critical to wear a properly fitted/typical bra for you. Check that the tape measure is straight and not angled.

  • Neck / Colar
  • At the height where your collar would sit, measure the circumference of your neck. If you want to be certain of your height, wear a shirt that fits well.

  • Bicep
  • Flex your arm to 90 degrees to find the widest point of your bicep, then relax your arm and measure the circumference at that point.

  • Wrist
  • Measure around your wrist where the jacket sleeve ends, keeping the tape measure snug but not too tight.

  • Sleeve
  • With your arm relaxed at your side, measure from the shoulder seam to the crown down to the desired length, usually at the base of your thumb where it meets your wrist.

  • Shoulder
  • Measure across the top of your back from the tip of one shoulder to the other; it does not have to be a straight line; rather, it should follow the natural curvature of your upper back if you can't find the tip of the shoulder and have a well-fitting shirt or jacket, measure between the shoulder seams.

  • Waist
  • Stand with your feet hip-width apart and measure your natural waist or the narrowest body part. Check that the tape measure is snug but not too tight, that it is level with the floor, and that it is not twisted.

  • Nape To Waist
  • Measure vertically from the base of your neck (collar seam) to the narrowest part of your body/waist. This should be the height at which you measured your natural waist just now.

  • Rear Jacket
  • Measure the length of the jacket vertically from the base of the neck (collar seam) to the desired length. Lift the collar of a jacket that you know fits you well to ensure you measure from the seam.

  • Trouser Waist
  • Measure around your waist at the height you want to wear your pants, not your natural waist. Do not over-tighten the tape measure. If you are unsure and have a pair of trousers that fit you well, put them on and measure around the waistband where they sit.

  • Hips / Seat
  • Measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat (tailor term for bum). Stand with your feet hip-width apart, pockets empty, and the tape level and untwisted. Do not pull the tape too tight; it should just barely touch your skin.

  • Trouser Length
  • Vertically measure from the top of the trouser waist down along the side pant seam to the desired trouser length. This is usually between 1-2 inches from the floor, but this will vary depending on your style. If unsure, wear a pair of trousers that you know fit you well and shoes similar to those you intend to wear with the suit.

  • Thigh
  • The circumference of your thigh should be measured at its widest point, which is usually near the top of the inseam but may be slightly lower depending on your physique.

  • Knee
  • Take the circumference of your knee instead of the previous measurement. These last two measurements are not usually required, so only include them if you believe they are problem areas for you in traditional fitting trousers.

Your bespoke suit for women will be completed quickly once you have all of your measurements.

Why Should Women Opt for Bespoke Suits?

A person's outfit reveals information about their personality. Choosing women's bespoke suits for special occasions such as weddings, parties, interviews, meetings, and conferences makes a good first impression.

Best For All Occasions

Best For All Occasions

When we began creating women's suits, we aimed to develop a custom program on par with the bespoke options for men in every manner. We wanted to change the fact that most tailors don't focus on women bespoke. All the hallmarks of our men's bespoke program are present in our women's suits.

There are only a few styles of off-the-rack suits available. You cannot wear them to every occasion, such as a wedding, an office meeting, or a date. A custom-made suit, on the other hand, is designed in such a way that you can wear it to all events.

When compared to off-the-rack suits, you can customize them to your liking. You can choose the fabrics and styles based on your preferences and budget. This is useful when planning for special occasions such as weddings.

Perfect Fit

Perfect Fit

Having the confidence to wear might be difficult for some women; not everyone is gifted with the ability to exude a radiant aura of attractiveness. The majority of females are self-conscious and frightened by their appearance. When designing your own unique clothing, it is important to pick something that makes you feel comfortable and at ease. It is not a good idea to force yourself to wear something that you are not satisfied with in the first place.

Instead of asking yourself what you can do to impress yourself, always ask yourself what you would like to see yourself doing in the mirror that makes your heart feel flatter. If you want to develop the personality that you desire, start with the most fundamental step, which is determining what you want. Later on, you can build your confidence and feel more at ease.

People frequently believe that off-the-rack suits provide a good fit, but this is incorrect. Nothing beats a custom-tailored suit. Exact measurements are taken in bespoke suits to ensure a perfect fit for the wearer.

Quality Outfit

Quality Outfit

Business branding is extremely popular because it helps create a unique identity that customers can quickly recall. We may also create a brand for ourselves in this way if we can tie it to our sense of style. We are given the choice of choosing the colors we want them to identify with us. People will remember you whenever they see one of them if we choose a peach color.

In bespoke outfits, you can choose your fabric. This enables you to choose high-quality materials, designs, and styles that will make you look great at any event. As a result, you can make a good impression on people, whether they are wedding guests or clients in a meeting.

Exhibits Your Personality

Exhibits Your Personality

Wearing a custom-made suit adds not only style but also reveals information about a person's personality, such as financial success, authority, trustworthiness, intelligence, and suitability for hire or promotion. Overall, a good appearance influences other people, making a favorable impression.

Along with plain colors, one can also look for checkered, polka, statement, or even graffiti prints. Owning one's identity has enormous power, especially for celebrities. Everyone is free to wear any color and style of clothing they would want while conducting business, therefore such branding is not necessary. Define your particular standards and likes to develop a distinctive style that you enjoy applying to yourself.

Bespoke Suits VS Haute Couture

Haute couture is to women what bespoke is to men. This is certainly true regarding craftsmanship and skill, but the similarities may end there. The term Haute Couture is legally protected in France by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. A fashion house must meet certain strict criteria to qualify for the official label. These include presenting two new collections to the press and clients each year, employing a certain number of people, and customizing garments for clients. A similar system has been established by the bespoke tailors of Savile Row in the United Kingdom. It is not enshrined in law, as the French one is, but certain criteria must be met to qualify for membership in the association.

Are bespoke suits only available for men? The short answer is 'No,' but nothing is that simple. Traditionally, the term bespoke applied only to men's tailoring; however, as women's clothing needs have changed, it is now applied to both genders. Many renowned Savile Row tailors have created and continue to create women's suits for many years. What is new is the growing number of female tailors who cater to today's businesswomen.

Frequently Asked Questions

The popular frequently asked questions about bespoke suits for women and other relevant topics follow. Have a quick look below.

  • What should a woman wear to look good in a suit?

Image result for selecting a bespoke suit for a woman

A suit must not be worn with a traditional shirt or a feminine blouse. Style yours with a simple white tee neatly tucked into your trousers for a modern take on the look. This look keeps your neckline high and professional while understated and stylishly edgy.

  • What is the distinction between tailored and bespoke?

The tailor will not alter base patterns if they miss an individual detail of your body. Pattern-making for bespoke suits extends beyond measurements. There is an initial consultation to take measurements and another once your suit has been made with custom tailoring.

  • Is bespoke preferable to made-to-measure?

A bespoke garment's fit will always be superior to a made-to-measure garment. Because bespoke tailoring takes into account many more factors that affect how well the suit fits, such as shoulder angles, sleeve angles, posture, shoulder width, and so much more.

  • What is the distinction between bespoke and custom?

Although these terms are frequently used interchangeably, they are not synonymous. Bespoke is a subset of custom. Not all custom suits are bespoke, but not all bespoke suits are custom.

  • Are bespoke suits handcrafted?

Hand sewing distinguishes bespoke suits from made-to-measure or off-the-rack suits. Although machine stitches look nice, they are restrictive and stiff, whereas hand stitching allows a garment to move and stretch.

  • Is it worthwhile to have a bespoke suit made?

On sustainability, there's an argument that a bespoke suit looks good because it's usually made locally, with more natural materials, and encourages reuse and repair.

Conclusion

Women's bodies and measurements are even more distinct than men's, so finding the perfect fit requires far more care and finesse. Whereas off-the-rack clothing is made up of generic patterns and sizes, our women's bespoke garments are made to each client's exact measurements, allowing for more precise sizing that is unique, stylish, and flattering. Looking and feeling your best boosts confidence in and out of the office, and nothing fits better than bespoke.

Whatever the occasion, formal tailoring and business wear are required. Try a softer drape of a classic silk skirt or jacket for a classic shooting weekend in the country.
