Key Factors to Consider When Choosing a Tailor North York

Gloria Briones • Sep 23, 2022

If you want to know the secret to owning a closet's worth of fine suits, it's not about looking for a specific brand or style. Working with a good tailor can make a huge difference. A tailor in North York can tailor a suit to your exact measurements, allowing you to assume the refined gentleman's appearance easily. It is in your best interests to find a reputable tailor with whom you can work long-term.

Every custom garment that Isaac Ely create is infused with true artistry. Each bespoke garment is designed on-site in our North York studio and fully executed by the master tailor in our workshop using the finest old-world craftsmanship.

Qualities To Look for the Best Tailor North York

Everyone wants their tailor who knows exactly what they want and what to do without having to nag and suggest what they should do every time. You will have specifics that you will look for when purchasing a bridal gown or a suit. When a tailor does not get it right, you may not realize it, but there are a few characteristics to look for when hiring a bridal, regular, or master tailor. This will outline a few characteristics to look for when looking for a tailor.

Tailor's Reputation

Tailor's Reputation

The reputation always comes before the quality of the service or goods. This is where the power of reviews and recommendations on blogs, forums, and other websites comes into play. If the tailor's reputation is good, you can speak with a few of his previous and current customers to learn more about his service. Don't forget to look into longevity as well.

Isaac Ely is skilled in various materials, including leather, denim, wool, fur, velvet, lace, bridal gown appliqué, etc. You're in good hands whether you need a bridesmaid dress tailored, a bespoke suit, a winter coat altered, a pant hem, menswear altered, a bridal gown altered, or anything in between. We have worked hard to establish a reputation for providing quick turnaround times, accurate work, transparent pricing, and unrivaled service.

The Store

The Store

It would be best if you always went to the shop in person to see how the operation is carried out. If the store is well-organized and clean, you can be confident that the tailor knows what they're doing and that your clothes will be kept clean.

We have no shortage of ideas for reviving your favorite pieces, from shortening pants hems to restructuring gowns, renovating couture items, and restyling a garment. With meticulous attention to detail, Isaac Ely will treat each item as if it were his own.

Thanks to our innovation, dedication, and extraordinary attention to detail, we have maintained continuous recognition as one of the most reputable and trusted tailoring establishments in North York, Ontario.

Sample Clothes

It would be best if you inspected the tailor's work. A photograph is insufficient. You must be able to feel and inspect the stitching and finish. Before you give the order, you should inspect it. You will be very disappointed if the outcome is not what you desired. The first step is to find a good quality tailor, and then you can begin with an alteration. This test run will ensure you have a good idea of what to expect. You will be able to evaluate the stitches and predict the outcome.

An Isaac Ely garment is built on the foundation of unrivaled craftsmanship. Each garment is made with a specialized pattern unique to your measurements, a full body canvas, a hand-padded chest, and lapels to create a three-dimensional work of art.

Isaac Ely provides the exclusivity of a one-of-a-kind garment, completely modeled and handcrafted to meet your exacting specifications. Our garment is the preferred choice of many influential men and a significant status symbol in North York - it is elegant, sophisticated, and empowering.

Effective Communication

Effective Communication

How can you proceed to get what you want to be done if you can't communicate with the tailor? So, make sure you can speak openly with your potential tailor to grow the customer and supplier relationship. Keep an eye out for these characteristics, and you'll be fine in your customized clothing!

Nothing less will suffice. At Isaac Ely, we prioritize relationships over sales. Our team will work with you from start to finish to ensure you are always comfortable, and our garments are guaranteed for life.

How To Find a Good Tailor

Here are some pointers for finding that tailor and finally getting your hands on the suits of your dreams.

Pay A Shop Visit

Pay A Shop Visit

A phone conversation with the tailor you're considering working with can help break the ice, but it may not be enough to understand better whom you're dealing with. The best thing you can do is still go to the tailor's shop in person.

You may be able to have a longer conversation with the tailor and look around the store if you do so. If something is wrong there, you will notice it quickly and redirect your search.

While you're there, ask your tailor about ways to stay in touch. It will be a huge plus if the person in question is tech-savvy, so the two of you can work out deals more quickly.

Check The Efficiency

Check The Efficiency

Tailoring is not an easy job. To satisfy your clients, you must pay close attention to details and always exhibit precision. You can't just sit around and wait for your tailor to respond. Before deciding whether or not they are the tailor for you, you should have a clear idea of how much time they will need to work.

Minor alterations should be completed within two to seven days on average, though you can give the tailor some leeway if it's peak season. The larger project could take two to three months to complete. However, those are only guidelines. What matters here is that the tailor meets the deadlines that you both agreed to. You don't want to work with a tailor who can't deliver on time.

Having clothing made to measure will give you an advantage in any situation, whether you're dressing up for a special occasion or want to look your best at work every day. What distinguishes Isaac's custom-tailored suits and fine clothing from ready-to-wear options is the perfect fit, exemplary quality, and perfect match of design and color.

Long-Term Partnership

Long-Term Partnership

To create the best alterations and suits, the tailor must learn more about you than just your measurements. They must also understand and consider your preferences, so it is critical to have a tailor with whom you can easily communicate.

Finding a good tailor is easier said than done, but there are some characteristics to look for that will lead you in the right direction. Hopefully, your search for a tailor will be fruitful, and you will soon be able to enjoy the luxury of having a custom-made suit.

Every Isaac Ely custom-tailored piece is built around you, the customer. We will listen to what you have to say. Tell us about your wants, needs, and pet peeves so that we can create the perfect bespoke or made-to-measure suit for you. Let's work around your schedule. Come to us, or we can come to you in person or virtually.

What You Should Expect in Your Tailor

Good dressmaking techniques are required for proper fitting and design. Placing patterns, cutting accurately along lines, stitching and pressing darts, basting by hand and machine accurately, stay-stitching with the grain, ease in fullness, shrinking out fullness, tailor pressing, machine stitching exactly on the proposed line and corner, invisible hemming, making, piped buttonholes and slide fastener plackets, applying to face and interfacing, and setting a sleeve smoothly in place are some of the skills to master. These building skills are unquestionably essential.

A Well-Fitted Product

A well-fitted garment provides satisfaction and looks good. A well-fitted garment has the right amount of ease and seam lines that follow the body's general shape. Any fitted garment is judged by how it looks on the wearer, and its success is highly reliant on how well it fits. Fitted garments are comfortable and allow the wearer to go about daily activities. They also fit the wearer's body snugly.

It drapes neatly, sets without wrinkles, sagging, or projecting out, and is well-balanced. To get a well-fitted garment, the patterns chosen should be thoroughly checked and have a good shape and proportion. Certain precise steps must be taken when cutting the garments. Most human figures are not perfect or proportionate, so alterations and corrections must be made.

After drafting, a specific garment must be tried on a body to ensure that the necessary pattern alterations are made. Apart from the major defects of the body, there may be minor defects that should be addressed while drafting the garment. To achieve a good fit, patterns should be planned along the grain, cut accurately, darts and ease in fullness should be stitched, and machine stitching should be done exactly on the proposed line. The sleeves should be placed in the armholes smoothly and evenly.

Factors That Determine Good-Fitting Made by Your Tailor North York

Style is a highly personal expression of who you are and your beliefs. Our goal is to find that essence and create a piece that is unique to you, which is the pinnacle of sophistication. We determine your style by paying attention to fit, fabric, color, and details. The pattern is then tailored to lengthen, slim, or divert attention away from problematic areas.

Ease, line, grain, set, and balance is the factors that determine whether a garment fits well or not. They are known as the standards for a good fit, and they are also interconnected.

Five basic factors in every fitting determine whether or not a garment fit properly. There is ease, line, grain, set, and balance. These five elements are interconnected.

  • Ease

The garment, which appears to be the correct size, is neither too big nor too small. The difference between actual body and garment measurements is also called ease. This amount varies according to fashion, garment type, and personal preference. The right size would be a garment designed for maximum comfort. Pulling and drawing across the bust, shoulders, or hiplines indicates insufficient ease. Excess ease causes folds across the loose areas, giving the garment a baggy appearance. Too much ease can be seen in long shoulder seams, many folds across the neck and chest, and a loose waistline. If a garment is well-fitting, it should fit without wrinkles or strain.

  • Line

The basic silhouette demonstrates the lines of a garment. The neckline, armhole, waistline, and wrist line are circumference lines. Lines should be smooth and neat, with no folds. Back and front curves should be smoothly graded. The armhole should be oval in shape, not pointed or round. It adheres to the natural creases formed where the arm meets the body. The curve lines should not be too low, as this will impede hand movements.

Inset sleeves require a straight side seam line from the armhole to the hem or lengthwise line. Front darts should end at the top of the bust, and side darts should end at the hands, with the bust in line with the top. To fit at the front waistline, the round waistline should be as parallel to the floor as possible, but slightly lower at the back and slightly lower and round in the front. Waist and hemlines should be parallel to the ground.

The lines created by darts, pleats, and yokes are internal to the garment and should be grateful and smooth. Lines within the silhouette, such as pleats, darts, and seams, should be graceful, direct, and smooth. Lines to look for in fitting are the basic silhouette seams, circumference seams, and style or design lines. The circumference lines include the neckline, armholes, waistline, and hemline. They should be smoothly graded curves that follow the natural body curves. Pleats, darts, and gores within the silhouette should appear to hang perpendicular to the floor, generally at right angles to the circumstance lines. They enter or radiate from the circumference they enter. Curved lines, such as yokes, should be direct, smooth, graceful, and symmetrically identical.

  • Grain

Grain is formed by the placement of warp and weft yarns. It indicates the threads' direction. The lengthwise or warp threads are usually heavier than the crosswise or filling threads. When gathers, pleats, and ruffles occur on the straight grain, heavier threads tend to drape well on the figure with graceful folds. Unless there are off-grain seams, the lengthwise grain should be perpendicular to the floor at the center front and center back. The crosswise yarns are parallel to the floor at the center front and center back. Except in the case of asymmetric draping, the grain on the right half of the garment should match the grain on the left half at the bust and hiplines. If the crosswise grain is covering up or down where it should be parallel to the floor, it is due to a bulge or hollow in the body directly above the curve. Wrinkles and sagging occur if the grain line is not corrected. The grain line can be off when the material is not cut carefully.

The lengthwise grain in the standard basic pattern is perpendicular to the floor (unless bias seams are in the design), and the crosswise grain is horizontal or parallel with the floor from the grain on the right half of the garment should match that on the left half, except in asymmetrical designs such as a side draped skirt. The lengthwise threads in a plain sleeve should lie vertically from the top of the shoulder to the elbow, and the crosswise threads in the upper sleeve should be parallel with the floor. If the crosswise grain curves up or down where it should be parallel to the floor, it is due to a bulge or hollow directly above the crosswise curve.

  • Set

A well-fitted garment is wrinkle-free and has a smooth set. The slanting wrinkles result from the garment being strained over somebody's curves or bulges. Slanting wrinkles in the sleeves and near the shoulder are unappealing and uncomfortably close to the shoulder. Crosswise wrinkles appear when the circumference below them is too tightly fitted.

Protruding shoulders cause wrinkles that point to the shoulder blade. Extra length and width for the garment should be provided to remove them.

A good-looking fit necessitates "set" smoothness or wrinkle-freeness. Graceful folds created by gathers, unpressed pleats, or draped features are distinct from wrinkles, those slanting triangles straining from a body curve or bulge.

  • Balance

The garment should appear balanced from left to right and front to back. The skirt should hang so that it is the same length from the center to the right and left sides. Necklines should fit snugly around the neck at all points. The garment will appear unbalanced if the shoulder seam stands apart from the shoulder at the neck and fits tightly at the armhole point.

The standard skirt should be hung to extend the same distance from the legs from right to left and front to back. The shoulder seam should be even on both sides of the shoulder. Diagonal wrinkles surround the bulge.

Frequently Asked Questions

The popular frequently asked questions about tailor North York and other relevant topics follow. Have a quick look below.

  • What are the boundaries of tailoring?

It depends on the garment, but a tailor can usually only take a suit in or out by 1.5-2 inches in either direction. Any more, and the overall proportions of the garment will be off.

  • How many sizes can a tailor accommodate?

The general rule is that you can go down two sizes at most, but a suit jacket or blazer that is only one size too big is a safer bet. The issue is that too big jackets can also be too big on the shoulders, which is more difficult to change.

  • Is it possible for a tailor to let out pants?

If you're suffocating inside your pants (they're too tight around the waist) or the waist is too big, and the pants are falling off you, a tailor can quickly take the waist in or out and give your trousers a more comfortable fit.

  • How long does it take to tailor a suit?

If you are a new customer to the tailor, the process will take a little longer because they will have to start from scratch. However, you should expect a 2- to 4-week wait from purchase to completion. Smaller shops can get it in as little as two days.

  • Can you take measurements at a tailor?

Indeed, if you want to be certain that your measurements are taken by a professional, you can go to any tailor and request that he measure you. It is critical that your tailor precisely follows our measurements instructions.

Conclusion

A well-tailored garment will complement anyone's style. Bring your garments to a professional who will take measurements and create the perfect fit, whether a sharp suit for business or a wedding gown.

Remember that even tailoring is an art rather than a science. Even the best tailors must sometimes make several alterations before getting it right. Regardless of your style, background, or the alterations you require, a quality tailor, North York, should be able to get you the perfect fit.
